In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.  In six days, he spoke into existence all of the things that we can see and know.  On the sixth day, he formed a man from the dust of the ground and woman from a rib of the man.   According to Genesis, God is the author of things and, therefore, is able to exercise his authority over them.  But is this the truth of the matter?

The Bible teaching of creation is very important.  Like a novelist has the authority to change anything and everything within a novel, like the novelist’s imagination and will are carried out in the book, so it is with God and the creation.  If God is the great maker, then God is the great authority.   If God is the master planner, then we must all follow God’s plan.  If Evolution is correct, then it doesn’t matter what God says, even if he exists.  If God did not bring about the heavens and the earth and all that is in them, then he really has no authority over them.  The God of creation is worthy of worship and adoration; a god constrained by evolutionary theory is not.  The gravity of this situation is not very difficult to understand.

This coming week, our congregation has a meeting planned that will examine the evidence concerning this very pivotal and very important Bible teaching of creation.  If the Bible is wrong concerning the origin of all things, then you might as well toss it aside and never read it again because the God it talks about is powerless and without authority.  If what the Bible teaches about creation is true, then you should pay careful attention to every word in the Bible because it comes from the God who has supreme authority and will judge all mankind on the basis of their deeds.  Either way, everything hinges on what the Bible has to say about God in Genesis 1.1.

If we are going to have faith in God’s word, then we must have faith in all of it.  If we are going to have faith in all of it, then we must be willing to scrutinize and examine every word of it from every angle.  We must be willing to do this without fear of what we will find.  If the Bible is found true, then we have a solid basis for knowing and obeying God.  If the Bible is not true, then we need to find the book that is, whether that is a biology book or some other religious writing.  We should be people who are seeking after the truth of the matter, not simply trying to justify what we have already determined as truth.  We should be searching for answers to our questions and allow the evidence to speak for itself, and then we must be willing to follow the evidence no matter the conclusion it points toward.

If we are going to be people of faith, then this is the attitude that we must have.  If we are going to be people who are pleasing to the Lord, then this is the course of action that we must take.  We must be people who are willing to “test everything” and to “hold fast what is good” (1 Thess. 5.21).

Along with this determination to find and know what is really true, there should be a zeal for teaching this truth to other people.  If Evolution is true, then we do not want to have anyone teaching from the Bible.  If the Bible is true, then there are some pages we need to take out of every biology book on the planet.  If we are certain about the conclusions we reach, then we should act like people who are sure.  However, the only way we can be sure is by sitting down and examining the evidence.  One way for us to do this is by attending the seminar on creation and evolution.  Plan on being there every night.  Plan on learning where the evidence is pointing.  Plan on being determined to follow the correct, truthful conclusion wholeheartedly.  Plan on inviting as many people as possible.  The truth should not scare us, it should set us free.
