It’s not always an easy thing to love the truth.   Sometimes it tells us things that we don’t like to hear.  For instance, the Scriptures tell us that we aren’t good enough to earn salvation.  They also tell us that we have fallen short of God’s glory in many ways and in many areas of our lives.

Sometimes the truth tells us things that aren’t easy to do.  Instead of serving ourselves, our lives should be focused on glorifying God by fulfilling the good works he has prepared for us.  Instead of focusing on pleasing ourselves, we should be focused on pleasing others.  Sometimes those are very hard things to do!

We shouldn’t love truth because it’s easy, fun or builds our egos.  We should love truth simply because it is truth.  If we only love something when it suits our needs or our appetites, then we’re really only loving ourselves.  If we only love what God says when it makes us feel good, then we’re not loving God at all; we’re simply loving ourselves and pretending that is loving God.

A real, genuine love for truth will cause us to be dedicated even when it hurts.  We will be dedicated to what God has said even when it means having to do hard things, like loving our enemies and giving preference to other people.  God isn’t seeking fair-weather fans.  God is looking for devoted disciples who will love him and his word through thick and thin, through difficulty and heartache, in all circumstances, places and times.

If we refuse to love the truth, to purchase it with our heart and mind and soul, then we reject the precious gift that comes along with it: God’s grace and forgiveness.  Jesus Christ spoke the words of eternal life, the truth of God which sets us free and sanctifies us—if, and only if, we are willing to love the truth and seek it out at all cost.
