I love Vacation Bible School (VBS)! I love watching the students get excited about learning from the Bible, and this year the learning focused on both the theoretical and practical aspects of the Scriptures. First we learned that God expects us to serve others, and then we learned how to do that daily in our lives. On Monday, the students learned about Ruth. Ruth left her home to stay with Naomi and showed dedication and determination in serving her mother-in-law. When there was work to be done, Ruth made sure things were done and she worked enthusiastically as if she was working for God (Colossians 3.23). If we can take Ruth’s selfless example of service and apply it to our lives, when we see a need that someone has, we will do our best to fulfill it and we will not stop until that need is met.
On Wednesday, we studied Timothy and his service to Paul. Paul’s life wasn’t easy, and there were several times where he felt completely alone in the work of preaching the gospel. Timothy was the faithful companion that Paul needed while traveling and preaching. Timothy was the person that Paul could trust to leave with new Christians and teach then accurately about the gospel of Jesus Christ. If we can take Timothy’s example of service and apply it to our lives, we will learn that service isn’t about the spotlight and that true companionship is about being dependable when we are needed most.
On Thursday and Friday, the students learned about the great service and help that God has given to us through Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. The students saw, acted out by our great helpers, the Lord of the Universe bow down and wash the feet of his friends. They learned how the Holy Spirit helped these men to remember everything that Jesus said and did, and how he aided them in recording that information for us. If we can look at the great effort that God has made to serve us and give us the words of eternal life, we can surely see that there is no greater work or service we could ever do than to share Jesus with others.
VBS was great and it has the potential to change young (and older) lives forever. Thank you so much to all who helped make VBS possible this year. Your work is certainly of eternal consequence!
