In today’s world reading in of itself is something that is slowly going away. Today, many people would rather watch the television for hours rather than read the newspaper or a book. And then on the Internet, many constantly watch three to five minute videos of the information they need. We’re moving into an age where we are able to video record instantly and load it on the web within a matter of minutes. However, with all of these changes many people refuse to read at all today. Unfortunately, this carries over into their spiritual life as well. While it’s not inherently evil to watch video’s, we must not get too caught up in it and neglect our responsibility to read the Bible.
The Bible is God’s word to us. 2 Timothy 3:16 tells us that scripture is “God-breathed.” In other words, we are reading from the mouth of God. Or some have described it as looking into the very mind of God. The Bible helps answer some of the greatest questions in life that many have pondered over. Where did I come from? What is my purpose in life? What happens to me after I die? Along with these questions the Bible gives us great insight on how to live our lives. What do I need to do with my life? How can I be a good parent? How can I be a good friend? What should I avoid in my life? How can I make my life successful?
We need to take time in our lives constantly to read from God’s word so we can have answers to questions like these. We as Christians should have the desire to read from the Bible. This should be something that we want to do not because we have to do it but because we want to. Psalm 32:8 tells us, “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.” If we can learn to continually go to our Bible, we will learn to have guidance in our every day lives. Continually going to the Bible can help keep us focused on what’s important in this world.
Christ tells us in Matthew 4:4, (4) But he answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.” We need food to keep going throughout our day. Food helps our physical bodies survive. The Bible is food for our spiritual bodies. Our spiritual bodies aren’t going to go very long without reading the Bible. You can’t go only eating on Sunday and Wednesday, and the same can be said about reading the Bible. We should be reading the Bible every day, not just on when we meet together for worship. The only way we are going to grow as Christians is spend more time reading and studying God’s word.
We need to have God and spiritual things on our mind continually. One of the best ways we can achieve this is by going to His word and reading what He has given us. God has given us all of the tools for a healthy spiritual life. The question now is, are you going to use them?
